During a recent webinar hosted by DOA Lan, the National Senior Director for Education and Patient Programming, Dr. Wright, a specialist in neurophysiology and neuromuscular disorders from Boston Children’s Hospital, discussed the delicate balance of exercise for managing myasthenia gravis (MG). She emphasized the critical importance of exercise for patients of all ages with MG, highlighting the challenges due to the disease’s impact on muscle strength and endurance and the limited research available.
Dr. Wright delved into how MG primarily affects muscle function at the neuromuscular junctions, causing fatigue and weakness, and how exercise can influence these symptoms. She reviewed current treatments for MG, noting their interaction with exercise, and presented recent studies that show the benefits of customized exercise programs in enhancing muscle function and overall life quality for patients with MG. Dr. Wright stressed the necessity of consulting healthcare providers to tailor exercise regimens to individual health needs and the progression of MG.
